About Santa Monica
Santa Monica is a beautiful coastal city west of downtown Los Angeles, bordered by the Pacific Ocean and sited next to the high-end neighborhoods of Pacific Palisades and Brentwood and above the beach communities of Venice and Manhattan Beach.
The city, with a population of 89,736 as of the 2010 census, is 8.3 square miles and has easy access to 3 main freeways.
Santa Monica has been a famed resort town for decades but experienced a boom in the 1980’s with a revitalization of its downtown that ushered in an era of significant job growth and increased tourism. Santa Monica now has its own community college, its own municipal airport, and hosts its own annual film festival!
Before homesteaders and adventurers pushed west, Santa Monica was long inhabited by the Tongva tribe and these native peoples called the area Kecheek. In the 1870’s, the Los Angeles and Independence Railroad connected Santa Monica and Los Angeles with a wharf out in the bay. The first town hall – which later turned into a beer hall – was built in 1873. It is now a hostel and is Santa Monica’s oldest extant structure. In 1885, the town built the first hotel called, appropriately named the Santa Monica Hotel.
The Santa Monica Pier, with its amusement park located above the broad beaches and adjacent to the bluff-side Palisades Park, enticed people to come from the greater Los Angeles area using the long-shuttered Pacific Electric Railroad. A part of that railway was replaced by coral trees and became a national monument in Brentwood. Palisades Park is still a popular destination for viewing a sunset over the ocean, and with the moderate climate, you can find people exercising or just relaxing outdoors at any time of year!
Today Santa Monica features luxury hotels, a wide variety of excellent restaurants, shopping opportunities for everyone, and, of course, the pier and beach. All of the elements that make it a popular vacation destination also provide residents with a year-round “staycation” environment! Whether you’re visiting or decide to stay forever, Santa Monica is an amazing place to be.
