About Falmouth

Known for it’s beaches, Falmouth is a coastal town on cape Cod Massachusetts. It sits in Barnstable county and has a population of 31,532 according to a 2010 census.

One of it’s beaches is Falmouth heights and sits right across from Marthas Vinyards. Falmouth is 54.4 square miles and sits on glacial sands and lies on the southwestern tip of Cape Cod. It’s surrounded by Bourne, Sandwich and Mashpee.

Falmouth is the 2nd largest municipality on Cape Code after Barnstable. Where you get on the Steamship authority ferrie to Martha’s Vinyard is located in the village of Woods Hole in Falouth.

English colonists settled on Falmouth in 1660 and the city was incorporated in 1686. Falmouth was named by Bartholomew Gosnold after his home port.

The war of 1812 brought some brief action to Falmouth, on the southern coast where is was bombarded by several British frigates and ships of the line and Massachusetts mililtia entrenched themselves on the beaches but the British landing never came.

In 1872, the train came to Falmouth and Woods Hole and then summer homes were established.  Large home building booms occurred in the 1970s, then 80s and 90s.

Not only does Falmouth have great beaches but there is plenty to do there.  The little coffee shops, the Woods hole Science aquarium, Falmouth Historical Society, places to eat and drink and there’s even a winery.

Falmouth is considered to be forward-looking and embraces their younger population than ever before, however, still, the town is deeply proud of it’s heritage so it’s worth checking out the museums, lectures, exhibits and culinary demonstrations.

If you have a family, this place is a great place to live as it’s super family-oriented.  The schools are great and obtained a Level One rating and the Falmouth Academy which is for college-prep for grades 7-12 have a beautiful campus and rigorous academics.

September is the best time for locals as the wheather is pristine, beaches are vacant and the sunsets are radiant with no wait time in restaurants.
