About Desert Hot Springs
In 500 B.C., Hippocrates, the “Father of Modern Medicine,” was the first to reference healing with water. In 1914, homesteader Cabot Yerxa discovered natural hot and cold mineral water aquifers in the area that nearly 50 years later would be incorporated as Desert Hot Springs.
The Desert Hot Springs Aquifer is heated to temperatures as high as 180 degrees by ancient geothermal forces thousands of feet below the earth’s surface. Native Americans believed the waters held curative powers and when the first scientific analysis of the hot mineral water was performed in 1937, its therapeutic value was affirmed.
In the simplest terms, balneology is the study of therapeutic bathing and the medicinal qualities of natural mineral waters. It’s especially advanced in Europe and Japan, where balneologists have studied geothermally heated mineral waters for many years. A few of the healthful effects they’ve discovered:
• Soaking increases blood circulation and cell oxygenation – the rejuvenating effect
• Soaking stimulates metabolism – the revitalizing effect
• Soaking helps to balance the body’s natural systems – the rebalancing effect
• Soaking can reduce pain and help to increase mobility – the feel-good effect
Hundreds of spas have been built throughout Desert Hot Springs to share the proven effects of the water with visitors. Historic Two Bunch Palms Resort and Spa is known as an exclusive celebrity hideaway and Angel View Children’s Hospital, established in the 1950s, uses the therapeutic water to treat disabled children.
While named for its “hot springs,” the city’s extraordinary, pure cold water wins awards such as “best tasting in the world” and it boasts some of the famous architecture that the area is known for. Desert Hot Springs is the location of renowned mid-century modern architect John Lautner’s first desert commission, and iconic actress Mary Pickford’s house still stands at the famous B-Bar-H Ranch that was frequented by movie stars during the 1940s and 1950s.
Located just south of Joshua Tree National Park, at an elevation of 1,200 feet, Desert Hot Springs also offers magnificent views of both Mount San Jacinto and Mount San Gorgonio. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing vacation, a second home in the desert, or a full-time residence, Desert Hot Springs is a city worth soaking in!
