About Bourne

Located on Cape Cod, in Barnstable County, this town has a population of 19,754 according to the 2010 census. It’s located at the western end of Cape Cod and surrounded by Sandwich, Falmouth, Marion and Wareham and then Plymouth and Cape Cod Bay.

The town is about 52.9 square miles and was formed around its location on Buzzards Bay and Cape Cod Canal. You can see lot’s of peninsulas and islands along the shore which creates lots of small coves and harbors.  The majority of settlement is along the shores of the canal in Buzzards Bay.

Bourne has many beaches, a town forest and lots of ponds and rivers.

A little history…Bourne was settled in 1640 by Ezra Perry.  It was officially incorporated in 1884 and was the last town to be incorporated in Barnstable county. It was named after Jonathon Bourne Sr.

The oldest store of in the nation is Aptucxet Trading Post and it sits in Buzzards Bay.  The site it sits on divides Cape Cod from the rest of the state and from this location, cape Cod Canal was formed.  Because of the Canal, Bourne is now considered the first town on the cape, as all three bridges are located in the town.

Bourne has a college called Massachusetts Maritime Academy, an air base called Otis Air National Guard Base and finally, it’s home to an archaeological curiosity called, Bourne Stone.  It’s featured markings origin or significance is still unknown.

As in all Cape Cod cities, lots of activities involve the water.  Whether its biking along the canal, kayaking, canoeing or padding boarding, there are lot of places to do that’s in and around Bourne.

The region has a castle, a Memorial Garden and pools amongst other things.  The best part is its near all of the major Cape Cod cities that have tons to do and lot’s to see.
